Laser Removal for Blue, Red, or Overly Dark Eyebrow Tattoos

Laser eyebrow tattoo removal is designed for people whose tattooed eyebrows have turned blue or red, or are too dark, and who want to fade them or remove them almost completely before getting them redone. At BonBoz, we use a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, with multiple sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart. Black ink tends to respond more readily, while red and orange inks do not respond as well. White ink and skin-tone pigments may change color after treatment. A doctor will examine you before treatment begins. Complete (100%) removal cannot be guaranteed.

What Are the Most Common Problems with Tattooed Eyebrows?

Many people had their eyebrows tattooed a few years ago. At first the color was soft and the shape suited them, but over time the pigment faded and changed to blue-gray or red-orange, or became much darker, making the face look older and harsher. Others have had two or three layers of tattooing applied over each other, ended up with an uneven shape, or have overly thick, heavy brows. Each situation involves a different amount of pigment, pigment color, and depth, so the approach and the number of sessions also differ. Many people also worry about being left with completely bare brows after removal, or about the pigment changing to a worse color, which is why the doctor examines you and explains the possible outcomes clearly before any laser treatment.

Short video: a BonBoz Clinic doctor asks about the goals of a client whose tattooed eyebrows are excessively dark — *"Consultation for removing overly thick, heavy eyebrow tattoos at BonBoz Clinic"*.

Can tattooed eyebrows that have changed color or turned too dark be removed? Can they be removed completely, or only lightened?

Key point: Before laser treatment, the doctor asks clearly whether you want to lighten the tattoo so you can still apply brow makeup, or remove most of it in order to re-tattoo. This goal determines the number of sessions.

Complete Removal or Just Lightening?

The goal of tattoo removal is not always to erase the pigment completely. For many people, lightening the brows to a soft brown tone looks far more natural than having bare brows, and it requires fewer sessions. If you want to re-tattoo with a new shape, the doctor will aim to lighten the pigment as much as possible. Whichever approach you choose, the results are reassessed after every session.

Short video: the doctor explains *"Laser eyebrow tattoo removal: lightening or complete removal?"*.

Can tattooed eyebrows that have changed color or turned too dark be removed? Can they be removed completely, or only lightened?

Key point: Removal is done over multiple sessions. In many cases, stopping at a level of lightening that suits your face is preferable to complete removal.

Pigment Color Determines How Well It Can Be Removed

  • Black and blue-black pigment: Usually responds better to the 1064 nm wavelength, though multiple sessions may still be needed.
  • Red and orange pigment: May respond to the 532 nm wavelength, depending on the pigment composition, but results are not particularly strong.
  • Green and blue pigment: The response depends on the specific pigment and the capability of the device.
  • White, skin-tone, and mixed pigments: Require special caution because of the risk of color change, turning black after laser (paradoxical darkening), and difficulty with further treatment. For white, skin-tone, or pigments of unknown composition, the doctor may consider first performing a small patch test according to professional protocol.

For this reason, at your consultation the doctor will ask how many times you have had your brows tattooed, where you had it done, and whether you have previously had removal or any other treatment. Some pigments may change color or may not be removed completely, and this is something you should hear clearly before starting.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Tattoo removal usually requires multiple sessions; complete clearance after one or two sessions cannot be guaranteed. The number of sessions depends on the pigment color, the amount of pigment, its depth, the technique used for the original tattoo, your skin's response, and the level of lightening you want. It can range from 3 to 15 sessions, so the doctor typically does not commit to a specific number in advance. The reference interval between two sessions is 4 weeks, adjusted according to actual recovery. The treatment is not repeated until the skin has fully recovered.

Can tattooed eyebrows that have changed color or turned too dark be removed? Can they be removed completely, or only lightened?

Key point: In this case, the first session focused on the dense black pigment and it lightened clearly. Every person responds differently, and this is not a guaranteed result for all cases. The total number of sessions remains only an estimate and is reassessed after each treatment.

Who Should Postpone or Needs Careful Evaluation by a Doctor?

Cosmetic laser tattoo removal should not be performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It should be postponed if the eyebrow area is inflamed, infected, has an open wound, or has an active cold sore. People with a tendency toward keloid scarring, tanned skin, or a history of complications after laser, as well as those taking medications that affect wound healing or cause photosensitivity, need to be evaluated by a doctor beforehand. Do not stop any prescribed medication on your own. For details, see the method page on the Pastelle Q-switched Nd:YAG Laser.

How Does BonBoz Approach Treatment?

The doctor examines you in person, identifies the pigment color, asks about your tattoo history and any previous treatments, and then advises on the likely response and the expected number of sessions. Tattoo removal is performed with the Pastelle laser (Wontech), a dual-wavelength Q-switched Nd:YAG at 1064 nm and 532 nm, with the mode, handpiece, and parameters selected for each type of pigment. Because the eyebrow area is close to the eyes, appropriate eye protection for the wavelength is always used. After each session, the doctor provides home care instructions and the warning signs that mean you should return to the clinic.

If your tattooed eyebrows are turning blue, red, or have become too dark, you can book an appointment so the doctor can examine the pigment and advise on the approach and the expected number of sessions before you begin. When you come in, bring photos of your eyebrows from when they were first tattooed (if you have them) and let the doctor know about any previous removal or other treatments. Call the hotline or leave your phone number to schedule an appointment.

Severity levels

1

Dark, black, or blue-black inks

Typically respond better to the 1064 nm wavelength; multiple sessions may still be needed to fade the ink as much as desired.

2

Red or orange inks

May respond to the 532 nm wavelength depending on the pigment composition, but results are not very strong; it's important to keep expectations realistic.

3

White, skin-tone, or mixed inks

The ink may darken or change color after laser treatment, which can make further removal difficult; the doctor may consider performing a patch test first.

When should you see a doctor?

  • If your eyebrow tattoo has turned blue, red, or darker than the original shade and you want to lighten or remove it before re-tattooing, an exam is needed to identify the pigment before choosing a treatment.
  • This also applies to eyebrow tattoos that were previously removed or treated elsewhere and have since changed color or darkened.
  • After a tattoo removal session, return to the clinic if pain, redness, or swelling worsens rapidly; if large blisters, burns, ulcers, or prolonged bleeding develop; or if you notice pus, fever, or signs of infection.
  • If you experience eye pain, blurred vision, or any change in vision after treatment of the eyebrow area, seek emergency eye care immediately.

How BonBoz treats it

Pastelle Laser (Q-switched Nd:YAG 1064 nm / 532 nm)

Ultra-short-pulse laser that breaks down tattoo ink particles; the 1064 nm wavelength targets black and blue-black ink, while the 532 nm wavelength helps treat red and orange ink. Treatment is performed over multiple sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart, with eye protection.

Frequently asked questions

Can eyebrow tattoos that have turned blue-ish be removed?

Laser treatment is an option; black and blue-black pigments generally respond better. Whether the tattoo can be removed, and how many sessions are needed, depends on the type of pigment, its depth, and how your skin responds, so a doctor needs to examine you first.

What about eyebrow tattoos that have turned red?

Red and orange pigments may respond to the 532 nm wavelength, depending on the pigment's composition, but results are often limited and less predictable. The doctor will explain clearly what can realistically be achieved before treatment.

How many sessions does eyebrow tattoo removal take?

It usually takes multiple sessions, anywhere from 3 to 15, depending on the pigment, its depth, and how much fading you want. This is only an estimate and is reassessed after each session.

How far apart are the sessions?

About 4 weeks is a general guideline, adjusted according to your recovery and actual response. Laser is not repeated until the skin has fully recovered.

Can the tattoo be removed 100%?

BonBoz cannot guarantee complete removal. Some pigments may change color or may not be removed completely; many people choose to lighten the tattoo to a natural level.

Should I remove the tattoo completely or just lighten it?

Lightening suits those who want natural-looking makeup and usually requires fewer sessions; near-complete removal suits those who want to have new brows tattooed. The doctor will advise based on your goals.

Can white or skin-tone pigments be removed?

Extra caution is needed, as these pigments may change color, turn dark or gray-black after laser, and become difficult to treat further. The doctor may consider performing a test on a small spot first.

Can I get tattoo removal while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Cosmetic laser tattoo removal is not performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Does eyebrow tattoo removal affect the eyes?

Because the eyebrow area is close to the eyes, eye protection appropriate to the wavelength must be used. If you experience eye pain, blurred vision, or any change in vision after treatment, you need to seek emergency eye care right away.

How much does tattoo removal cost?

1,500,000 VND per session. The number of sessions is determined by the doctor after a direct examination.
